𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒔?

I started training in martial arts when I was 3 years old.

𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒅𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒐 𝒊𝒕?

My parents were given a very hyperactive little boy who needed some focus and discipline. I may have been a bit of a biter when I was little. I also loved Power Rangers, Batman, X-Men, Dragon Ball Z, Spider-Man, and Ninja Turtles led me to seek training. All their fighting, powers, moves, and cool adventures.

𝑾𝒉𝒐 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔, 𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒆?

I have always been inspired by Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li films of the 1970s-90s era. They seemed to provide not only cool fight scenes and choreography but also an ongoing thematic message of sticking up for what you believe in, fighting for justice and honor, and striving for beauty and peace.

𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒂𝒗𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒔?

My favorite part of martial arts has always been the power and grace of a single move or pose, its ability to convey discipline, wisdom, beauty, and sophistication instantly. When a skilled martial artist simply does even just one move, it can have like such a captivating effect on others, like the sound of a gong or church bell suddenly cutting through other mental chatter to have a brief but powerful moment of silence and awe. As I age, I find that my favorite part is martial arts ability to have transformative magic over more than just an individual's physical prowess but family and relationship reach.

𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒅𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒍?

I have always loved practicing martial arts, and teaching martial arts is the best way to maintain personal study and growth. Sure, owning your own business or school has freedom and big responsibilities, but it's really the love of teaching people what I hold to be sacred and magical that drove me to open.

𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒆𝒏𝒋𝒐𝒚 𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒘𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒍?

The people I get to train with are what makes it all worthwhile. They say the more real, authentic, and true to yourself, two things will happen… You'll lose a lot of friends and people in your life because of this growth, but you will slowly attract your true TRIBE. Working hard yet still being funny, silly, and goofy has allowed me to showcase the philosophical depth, rich history, and power martial arts has to offer, and happiest it's with the people I love being around.

𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒅𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒕𝒓𝒚 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒔?

Everyone should try martial arts, not just for the athletic physical benefits, but being able to defend yourself provides a level of confidence that will reach every other aspect of your life. Your family and friends will be transformed from your hobbies to your career. Plus, it's a wonderful way to pass the time, age gracefully, and be poetically expressive with your mind, body, and spirit.

𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒈𝒐 𝒐𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒂𝒗𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒗𝒂𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏?

I was super lucky to visit the city of Foshan, Guangzhou, China, in 2018 and 2023. Foshan is famous for being the birthplace of Wing Chun and the home of Grandmaster Ip Man, and their food was amazing.

𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒂𝒗𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒃𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒍?

I have always loved math, geometry, and Drafting "AutoCAD." The freedom to play a video game that allows you to make and create everything from buildings to parts, furniture, and info charts is just wonderful.

𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒘 𝒖𝒑?

When I was little, I dreamed I would grow up to be a master Lego builder and move to Legoland in California. This love of Legos as building and creative toys led me to study drafting and AutoCAD. I believe my natural skill or liking for math stems from patterns and planning from Legos. In turn, I grew to love fabrication and woodworking because of wood's versatility to be large furniture or small usable items.

The biggest thing I want my students to know about me is that I'm paradoxically two-spirited. I'm afraid all the time; I make mistakes every single day, I worry about my life, my job, my kids, and my family, and I have constant doubts about the choices and decisions I make. All that said, I'm also filled with the overwhelming feeling of confidence to live my life and be authentically me without shame or judgment. I want to show the world my passion for things, be expressive, and convey the things I find fascinating. I always move in the direction of the things I want and strive to be a loving father, son, brother, friend, boss, leader, and helpful-kind person. I'm constantly looking for good in every single person I meet, and I wake up every day motivated by the fact that I'd much rather spend my time chasing my dreams instead of staying in bed dreaming my dreams.
